| TYPE: Game, LARP |
Intro to Rokugan and the L5R system:
Rokugan is the focus of the Legend of the Five Rings setting. It is based heavily on feudal Japan, though it also includes aspects of other Asian cultures, as well as magic and mythical beasts. Rokugani society is based on a clan structure, with seven (and later eight) so-called "Great Clans", as well as several minor clans. Each clan also has areas of land bequeathed by the emperor under their control. The emperor retains ownership off all lands, however, and the clans essentially rent the lands they use by paying taxes annually.
Rokugani define themselves through a caste system. The emperor retains quasi-religious status, he is followed by the Clan Champions who are the leaders of the great and minor clans: The Daimyo. They are the provincial leaders, who retain the samurai kuge caste: the warriors (samurai), courtiers, and spellcaster (shugenja). The caste beneath samurai are monks known as the brotherhood of shinsei who command no political authority but are keepers of wisdom and thus respected. The Boge caste (aka: heimin--'half people') are comprised of peasants, craftsmen and merchants in order of importance. The lowest caste is the eta (non people) who are forced to touch bodies—which makes them unclean. Entertainers, geisha, gravediggers, and other seedy people. All above castes can technically kill anyone of a lower caste, but unless the member acts disrespectfully to them, it is inadvisable to do so as there are usually repercussions from someone who has retained them. Almost everyone will be playing someone from the samurai caste.
Even the most thick-headed samurai obey the law of bushido: Gi (honesty and justics), Yu (heroic courage), Jin (compassion), Rei (polite courtesy), Meyo (honour), Makato (Sincerity) and Chung (duty and loyalty). It has been ingrained in all people since childhood that polite courtesy is an unbreakable taboo. Instead, those who wish to insult others do so by cunning jabs, veiled threats, and impolite behaviour. This is often subtle, and thus an exceeding challenge in a role playing environment because it focuses on the players ability to be witty out of character and other characters to catch on to the cues of insult, rage, or deception in other players. As with most LARPs, 'playing up' or adding melodrama is a good tactic to make sure your characters behaviour isn't missed by other PC's.
In the inevitable clash of wills between clans, there are several ways to solve problems before violence, and to end feuds that have become unprofitable. Marriage is one of the first ones, as it unites the two clans together. It's quite common in Rokugan to marry for the clan, and take a separate lover outside it. Hostage taking (not kidnapping) is also a commonly practiced tradition, where a member of one clan is traded between the two. Hostages are treated as honoured guests, and may even be allowed to train in the dojo of their captors. Dueling is the last resort between two members of a clan, and the Clan Daimyo must first be asked if they will allow it.
While Rokugani people have long drawn out literary histories, cyphers, and texts a great deal of importance is placed on presentation and face (“On”). On is represented by how polite and courteous you act. This makes it an excellent challenge to role play because of the rules of etiquette are rather subtle. Players are encouraged to do their best, and ask for assistance or drop out of character if need be to ask for clarification.
